Section A
In ancient times, the Chinese people believed that having a woman rule the country would be as unnatural as having "a hen crows1 like a rooster at daybreak", but during the most glorious years of the Tang dynasty a woman did rule, and she ruled successfully. She was Wu Zetian, the only female in Chinese history to rule as emperor. She managed to rule China during one of its most peaceful and cultural periods.
Wu was born in a rich family. She was well known for her intelligence and beauty. She became the new empress2 of Emperor Kao Tsung by accusing his former empress of killing her newborn daughter. Soon after Kao Tsung died, Wu Zetian set her youngest and much weaker son as the new emperor. She ruled China by telling him what to do. A few years later, her son gave up his position, and Wu Zetian was declared the empress of China.
In spite of her merciless climb to power, her rule proved to be excellent. She found the best people she could to run the government, and treated those whom she trusted well. She reduced the army’s size and stopped the influence of aristocratic3 military men on government by replacing them with scholars. Everyone had to compete for government positions by taking exams, thus the practice of a government was run by scholars. Wu also was fair to peasants, lowering taxes, raising agricultural production and strengthening public works. She also supported the development of Buddhism4 in China and helped it rise to its highest position. In addition, she tried to improve the position of Chinese women.

Memorial Day(美國(guó)陣亡將士紀(jì)念日)is established for remembering the soldiers who died in wars. We hear much about war heroes on this day. The television is filled with movies and speeches that praise the sacrifices of wars.
But what about the peace heroes? Why is there no special day to remember those who died because of their fighting for peace? Such heroes like:
Mahatma Gandhi —He led India to independence from England in a peaceful way, and then tried to end religious problems in his country. He was killed while leading a public meeting.
Martin Luther King, Jr. —He followed Gandhi’s example of getting peace through non-violent ways. He also led the American civil rights movement to great success, and spoke powerfully against war. But he was murdered at age 39.
Yitzhak Rabin —As Prime Minister of Israel, he negotiated for peace with Egypt, Jordan and Palestine. He was killed while taking part in a peace meeting.
Peace Pilgrim —During the Korean War, she traveled 25,000 miles on foot. Even though she had no money, she spread the message of peace to every corner of the world. "Overcome evil with good, falsehood with truth and hatred with love," she said. She died in a car crash while being driven to make a speech.

Yellow fever is a disease usually found in South America and Africa. Two types of yellow fever are known. There’s jungle yellow fever which primarily affects monkeys, and there’s urban yellow fever which primarily affects humans.
This fever is generally not serious but can cause other illnesses that are life-threatening. When one gets yellow fever, symptoms1 such as coldness, muscle aches, headache and backache may be experienced. This can also lead to kidney2 and liver3 failure. The patients’ skin and the white of their eyes turn yellowish when the disease progresses.
For a long time, doctors and scientists argued about how people get yellow fever. Several theories were given, but none can explain how the disease is spread.
It was Dr. Carlos Finlay, a Cuban scientist and doctor, who first said that the fever’s carriers are actually mosquitoes. Several researches and studies were done to prove this, but it was almost 20 years later until this theory was completely proved to be true.
Dr. Carlos Finlay is known as a pioneer in fever research. It was he that discovered the carrier of this virus and the way it transfers from one host to another. Because of his achievements in the field of research and medicine, he served as Cuba’s chief health officer from 1902 to 1909.This achievement, no doubt, adds glory4 to the Cuban flag and brings pride to Cubans everywhere.
